Texas State: Texas School Safety Center

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) is an official university-level research center at Texas State University. The TxSSC is tasked in Chapter 37 of the Texas Education Code and the Governor’s Homeland Security Strategic Plan with key school safety initiatives and mandates. Specifically, the TxSSC serves as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of safety and security information through research, training, and technical assistance for K-12 schools and junior colleges throughout the state of Texas. In addition, the TxSSC also builds partnerships among youth, adults, schools, law enforcement officers, and community stakeholders to reduce the impact of tobacco on all Texans through prevention, training and enforcement initiatives.

Texas Association of School Boards School Safety Services 

School safety is a top concern for school districts across Texas. To support your efforts, TASB offers many school safety services and training opportunities—available exclusively for member districts.

Working with TASB on school safety issues means that you can tap into our staff of experts who can apply their knowledge to your unique needs. We offer free and subscription-based specialized training, consultation services, and information on school safety and emergency management.

Texas School Safety Legislation 

America’s 100,000 K-12 public schools are, on average, nearly 45 years old. That means our schools, serving nearly 50 million students as well as 6 million teachers and staff, are not necessarily equipped to handle the unprecedented safety and security threats faced in today’s world. And that’s why the Secure Schools Alliance (the Alliance) was started – to convene education, public safety, fire, police, policy makers, parents, industry and community organizations and address the physical safety and security of our nation’s schools.

The Alliance is focused on improving our schools’ security infrastructure, security technology and life safety systems as one channel to better protect our kids and teachers. We recognize there’s no single solution to making our schools safer. It requires a holistic approach – physical safety and security, mental health, training, among other things.

Prior to the Alliance, no other organization was focused on school infrastructure and technology needs as a part of that holistic approach. Simply put, physical safety and security is where we see a need to make a difference and are able to do so.
